Watts debuts 70-tile Muresque mural at October Golden California Show

Eric Ramos to the rescue in risky Fresno salvage job

Highlighting this year's Golden California Show slated for October 9th and 10th will be a 70-tile mural that dealer Eric Watt is still in the process of salvaging from the estate of the owner of Muresque Tile. He will be showcasing this phenomenal 7' x 10 1/2' Spanish Courtyard scene, along with several dozen tiles from the Fresno estate.

"I have been digging around there for about a week," reported Watt, owner of Caltiles.com, in early September. He hopes to have the showstopper out of the wall in time for the sixth annual show, but he will certainly have plenty of never-before-seen tiles from the estate. He enlisted master tile salvager, Eric Ramos, to help in the process of the massive extraction.
"It is either Claycraft or Muresque," he said of the tile mural, adding that Muir was a big collector of tile, especially Claycraft, so it was not necessarily made by his own company. " I won't know for sure until I can see the back of one of the tiles."
Watt is not certain what he will price the mural at yet, but suspects a likely buyer will be somebody who is custom building a large Spanish style home.
Watt will be featuring other tiles from the estate of Muir, who founded Muresque Tiles in Oakland in 1925. The factory was located at 1001 22nd Avenue. Muir was not always a California boy; he was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, where he apprenticed as a tile setter.
Watt's selection at the show will include nearly a dozen individual tiles that belonged to the founder. He will also debut an original Muresque catalog from the 1930s, a couple of old boxes in which the tiles were shipped, prototype fireplace surrounds depicting the history of California (certainly appropriate for the Golden California Show, and large tiles hand signed "W. Muir."
"These were probably prototype pieces," said Watt.

Inspired by both Batchelder and Claycraft
"There will be all kinds of neat historical items," he said. "The more I dig, the more I find."
Muresque tiles, among the finest tiles produced in California, were inspired by both Batchelder and Claycraft tiles. Among the many tiles, trim shapes and accessories offered by Muresque, the company produced over 130 decorative tiles, most molded in high relief with a raised border and used as wall or mantel inserts. The subject matter was always romantic, depicting the majestic California landscape, scenes from nature, medieval imagery, and most notably, ships at sea.
In addition to Watts' tiles, there will be more than 40 other dealers in the 11,000 square foot Glendale Civic Auditorium. Offerings will include California Rancho style and Arts & Crafts furniture, early California pottery, fine art, iron metalwork and lighting, American Indian and Old West, Mexicana, and even smaller specialties, such as Big Bear Lodge and High Sierra Cabin.
Los Amigos del Arte Popular will be holding a panel discussion of masks, "The Arts of the Mexican Mask," on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The lecture is free with paid show admission.

Associate producer, Ted Birbilis, made a last minute announcement of some additional dealers. Just joining the roster were Federico, Andrew Munana Collection, Caskey Lees, Stephen Johnson, Michael Tierney Fine Art, Rod Bartha Antique Interiors, Brian Kaiser, and Len Woods Indian Territory.
Show hours are Saturday from 10-6 and Sunday from 10-4. Tickets sales ($12 each) start at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday morning.
This is producer Ted Birbilis and Sandy Raulston's first Golden California show since their new and wildly successful Antiques & Objects L.A. which was held in the same venue, in March.

According to Janet B, there is a simple strategy for visiting Tasca: "Plan on drinking wine because they have a wonderful selection and many of their servers are sommeliers who'll give you the best recommendations." A new dress was the occasion for Jennifer J and her fella to check out Noir Food & Wine in Pasadena, but we have a sneaky feeling they won't need an excuse to go back. "Throughout the evening we enjoyed not only the sweet, friendly, and exceptionally knowledgeable bartender assisting us with the wine and menu, but also the company of Claud Beltran himself." Ooh, that dress was a show stopper!

But the book lands precariously on the railing's narrow edge. As its leaves flap against the taunting wind, it's apparent, to at least one of the spectators, that it's less than book. It's a crudely pruned, dog-eared codex; margins —cut within a hair of its typographical life.Bound by a pair of sweat tarnished butterfly nuts, only seventy of its original 277 pages survive. It's degenerated into an odd mélange of cryptic notes, randomly illustrated in a pastiche of cartoonish burlesques, and grotesque doodles, peppered with ironic whimsy.

Liberty Island- New York City – May 17th, 1927 — 7 a.m.

ON THE BALCONY ENCIRCLING the Statue of Liberty's torch, seven pairs of eyes are imprisoned by the tangerine dawn peeling out of the choppy waters of New York City's bustling harbor.

—Suddenly a playful meteorological force liberates their eyes from the morning sun and directs their gaze to an shabby object which hints at the tragic consequences of unrequited redemption.

Hatch's codex chronicles a fantastic odyssey. Its characters are warped reflections of that Homerian expedition, witnessed from a house of melting mirrors.

The patriarchal hero is an actual Cyclops, or at least a one-eyed Irish colossus who spins mesmerizing and assumes roles so compelling, that the dreams he conjures captivates his spellbound audience.

2Hatch Johns is a twenty-six-year old ex-patriot. He returned to the New York three days ago on a mission to rid himself of a demon. As an adult, about a year ago, he discovered that his cherished accomplishment as a child was responsible for the deaths of his surrogate parents and the fiery destruction of Dreamland, Coney Island's most stellar attraction. To fight his grief, he has fallen under the spell of author Dr. Natalie Kohl, a controversial psychologist who has written a book designed to exorcise guilt by creating and living out fantasies of redemption.

Dr. Kohl is on her own mission. She is leading a tour to recruit the next generation of prodigies who will develop their gifts out of the foundation's new headquarters in San Francisco. At this moment, she and her party are on the verge flying across the Atlantic in a specially constructed airship, resembling a winged elephant.

For the last couple of mornings Hatch Johns waits on the torch of the Statue of Liberty for his muse to appear over the Atlantic. Not only is he rigorously following Kohl's advice to conjure up an extraordinary fantasy, he has also incorporated her into it. As he waits, he is constantly making notes in a journal which has integrated pages from Kohl's book and his own notes.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in the small town of Friedrichshafen, Germany, the crew Zeppelin is frantic. Just hours before the launch, Dr. Kohl is missing.

This fact is angrily brought to the attention of Zeppelin president, Dr. Hugo Eckener by his second in command, Captain Ernst Lehmann. Over the last few months, there have been several occasions where her conduct, in the brief moments he has seen her, has upset him.

It is Eckener's job to command the flight to America, but once there, it will be Lehmann's job to command the vessel throughout the remainder of the maiden tour, which will last until the end of 1927.

Lehmann believes this absence from Friedrichshafen comes at a high price. From the profit the Zeppelin Corporation is making from constructing the elephant airship, the near bankrupt company is slowly constructing its own ship, the Graf Zeppelin. When completed in about a year from now, they will inaugurate the world's first international passenger service. This has been the long held dream, interrupted by not only the war but the constraints of the Treaty of Versailles. Since he is the only available airship commander, grudgingly Lehmann has agreed to be absent in the final stages of the Graf's construction. He knows that he risks the possibility of losing influence in the company at its time of its greatest potential glory.

Ending the mystery, Zeppelin headquarters receives a call alerting them that Dr. Kohl has been detained in the city of Stuggardt, about three hours away by air from headquarters. Eckener decides that instead of delaying the launch, that he will pick up Dr. Kohl using their auxiliary plane held in the airship's belly.

With the exception of Kohl's short radio transmission, the job of introducing the prodigies and explaining the purpose of the recruitment tour to the audience is left Eckener. The prodigies' peculiar behavior makes Eckener ill at ease and he dreads the additional responsibility Kohl's imposes on him. The passenger roster not only includes the seven prodigies, fourteen crew but seven newspaper correspondents; six European and one American.

After a successful launch, Eckener's first objective was to dispatch the small biplane to pick up Dr. Kohl at an airport. Unfortunately, since the plane was designed to be a light a possible, there will be almost no room for Dr. Kohl's luggage. To handle the aviation and the diplomacy, Eckener makes choose a crew member who fought against the German's in WW1, and personally shot down four Zeppelins. While the wisdom of this selection is not only questioned by Captain Lehmann, and the American correspondent, a new problem it brought to Eckener's attention. There's a mysterious stowaway on board who may compromise the safety of the helium bags. It's a two-year-old spider monkey.

To capture the creature, Eckener recruits a few of the prodigies, particularly one that is known for her ability to talk to animals.

The adventure brings the girls into the bowels of the ship where they have the opportunity to experience the behind the scenes mechanics. While trying to capture the monkey, their individual personalities are further illuminated.

Before the monkey is actually caught, this wild adventure comes to an abrupt end. Dr. Kohl has arrives on board. She is haughty, cold and contemptuous of Eckener for allowing the prodigies to participate in the attempt to capture the monkey. She feels that this demonstration of his unprofessionalism warrants her, for the protection of the girls, to isolate the them from him and his crew. Eckener tries to soothe her displeasure by replacing Kohl's lost clothing. She retorts that none of her clothes needed to be sacrificed in order for the plane to pick her up. She left the pilot back at the airport and flew the plane herself..

Hatch Johns is a twenty-six-year old ex-patriot. He returned to the New York three days ago on a mission to rid himself of a demon.
